Dentures are replacements for missing teeth that can be taken out and put back into your mouth. While dentures take some getting used to, and will never feel exactly the same as one’s natural teeth, today’s dentures are natural looking and more comfortable than ever.
There are two main types of dentures: full and partial. Your dentist will help you choose the type of denture that’s best for you based on whether some or all of your teeth are going to be replaced and the cost involved.
How do Dentures Work?
With full dentures, a flesh-colored acrylic base fits over your gums. The base of the upper denture covers the palate (the roof of your mouth), while that of the lower denture is shaped like a horseshoe to accommodate your tongue.
Dentures are custom-made in a dental laboratory from impressions taken of your mouth. Your dentist will determine which of the three types of dentures described below is best for you.
Conventional or Immediate Full Denture.

- Conventional Full Dentures
Conventional full dentures are made after any remaining teeth have been removed and your gums have fully healed. Because the healing process can take several months, you may be without teeth during that time. Once your mouth has healed, your custom dentures are created to provide a comfortable, natural-looking fit. - Immediate Full Dentures
Immediate full dentures are placed on the same day your remaining teeth are removed, so you never have to go without a smile. Before your extraction appointment, your dentist will take detailed measurements and impressions to create your dentures. As your gums and jawbone heal, your mouth will naturally change shape, so your dentures will typically need to be relined or adjusted after a few months to maintain a secure, comfortable fit. - Partial Denture
Partial dentures are designed for patients who still have some healthy natural teeth. They attach to a custom metal or acrylic framework that fits securely around your existing teeth. In some cases, dental crowns may be placed on natural teeth to provide additional support and stability. Partial dentures are removable, comfortable, and an effective way to restore your smile while preserving your remaining teeth.
